Everything you need to know about lymphatic therapy at AÑOR Wellness.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a specialised, gentle form of therapeutic massage that works with the body's lymphatic system. Using precise, rhythmic movements applied with very light pressure, MLD encourages the movement of lymphatic fluid through the lymph vessels and nodes, supporting the body's natural processes of fluid balance, immune function and waste clearance.
Unlike deep tissue massage, MLD works at the level of the skin, targeting the superficial lymphatic capillaries just beneath the surface. It is both deeply relaxing and clinically purposeful, activating the parasympathetic nervous system while supporting lymphatic flow throughout the body.
Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy is a comprehensive, evidence-based treatment approach used in the clinical management of lymphatic conditions such as lymphoedema and lipoedema. It is a multi-component therapy that typically includes Manual Lymphatic Drainage, compression bandaging or garments, skin care, and therapeutic exercise.
At AÑOR Wellness, Natalie is trained and certified in the Casley-Smith method of DLT, one of the most widely recognised approaches in lymphatic therapy. Treatments are tailored to each individual's presentation, history and goals, and are grounded in current physiological understanding of the lymphatic system.
They are quite different in both technique and purpose. A regular remedial or relaxation massage applies firm pressure to the muscles, targeting tension, pain and circulation in the musculoskeletal system. Manual Lymphatic Drainage, by contrast, uses extremely light, slow, and precise strokes that work on the superficial layers of skin and connective tissue where the lymphatic capillaries sit.
MLD follows specific anatomical pathways of the lymphatic system and requires specialist training to perform correctly. The pressure used is far lighter than most people expect, yet the physiological effect on lymphatic flow, fluid balance and the nervous system can be profound. It is a therapeutic modality in its own right, not a variation of standard massage.
Lipoedema is a chronic condition characterised by an abnormal, symmetrical accumulation of adipose (fat) tissue, most commonly in the legs, hips and buttocks, and sometimes the arms. It is a distinct condition from general obesity and is not resolved through diet or exercise alone. Lipoedema tissue is often painful or tender to touch, and the affected areas may bruise easily and feel disproportionate to the rest of the body.
It is thought to be hormonally influenced and predominantly affects women, often becoming apparent or worsening during hormonal transitions such as puberty, pregnancy or menopause. Lipoedema is frequently misdiagnosed or dismissed, which can leave those living with it without appropriate support for many years.
At AÑOR Wellness, lipoedema is an area of particular focus. Natalie brings both clinical expertise and lived experience to her work with lipoedema clients, offering care that is informed, compassionate and individually tailored.
Lymphoedema is a chronic condition in which damage or dysfunction of the lymphatic system causes a build-up of protein-rich lymphatic fluid in the tissues, resulting in persistent swelling. It most commonly affects the limbs, but can occur in other areas of the body depending on the cause.
Lymphoedema may be primary, meaning it arises from a developmental abnormality of the lymphatic system, or secondary, occurring as a result of damage to the lymphatic vessels or nodes. Common causes of secondary lymphoedema include cancer treatment (particularly surgery or radiation involving lymph nodes), infection, trauma or chronic venous insufficiency.
While lymphoedema is a lifelong condition, it can be effectively managed with appropriate treatment. Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy is a widely recommended approach and may assist in reducing swelling, softening fibrotic tissue, and supporting long-term limb health and quality of life.
MLD is suitable for most people and is generally very well tolerated. However, there are some contraindications where treatment would not be appropriate, including acute infection or inflammation, active malignancy not under medical management, acute deep vein thrombosis, and certain cardiac or renal conditions.
As a Registered Nurse and DLT Practitioner, Natalie conducts a thorough health intake with all new clients prior to treatment. This helps to ensure your treatment is safe, appropriate and tailored to your individual health status. If you have any concerns about your suitability for treatment, please reach out before booking and Natalie will be happy to discuss your situation with you.
